Tennessee Lithium
Tennessee Lithium is being designed as a world-class lithium hydroxide production facility and one of the most sustainable conversion plants of its kind. Located on a site within the North Etowah Industrial Park in the City of Etowah and McMinn County, Tennessee, the project is well-situated in a region with a strong manufacturing workforce, power infrastructure, rail, highways, and nearby riverways.
The plant is expected to produce 30,000 metric tons of lithium hydroxide per year. This capacity would more than double the current American production capacity of approximately 20,000 metric tons annually and greatly contribute to U.S. energy security. An offtake agreement from the Ewoyaa Lithium Project in Ghana is expected to bring spodumene concentrate to the United States for production and conversion to lithium hydroxide in Tennessee.
We now hold all the material permits required to begin construction and are devoting 2024 to evaluate our funding strategy, including project financing and partnership opportunities for Tennessee Lithium.
Proximity to expected customers reduces transportation distances for a more responsible supply chain emissions profile
Excellent infrastructure, including rail, road, and river transportation
Industry-leading sustainability profile, leveraging innovative Metso:Outotec technology
Job creation supported by a skilled local workforce
Selecting Tennessee
In September 2022, Piedmont Lithium announced the selection of the city of Etowah and McMinn County as the site of Tennessee Lithium.
The region features access to excellent infrastructure, including rail, road, and river transportation. With proximity to battery and automotive plants being constructed by prospective customers, the city of Etowah and McMinn County also are near Piedmont’s corporate headquarters and Carolina Lithium project, both of which are located in Gaston County, North Carolina.
